What do I need?

To get on your way to a career in Earth sciences, you'll need to:

Pack your Survival Skills for a Journey to Success!

Get Started Today

Connect with other students who are also interested in math and science. Join a math or science club after school or participate in science competitions. Look on-line for websites that connect you with more Earth science info, with links to real Earth scientists in action, chat rooms you can join, and clubs that will keep you in the loop, such as:

Ask a Scientist

Natural Resources Canada

Kids Club - Energy & the Environment

School Counselors & Career Centers

Visit your school's guidance/career counselor and find out what they suggest for exploring career paths in science and math. They may suggest courses, summer internships, co-op programs, or extracurricular activities for you to get involved in. There are career planning courses available, as well as work experience placements within Earth science companies. Look up local societies or associations that are connected to Earth science, such as Geoscientists Canada. Check out university, college, and technical school career centres, which also have great resources for you. Many offer career days for high school students.

Connect With Professionals

If you or a friend knows someone who works in the Earth sciences, see if they could provide advice or tell you how they found their career path. Perhaps you could join them at work for a day or ask for guidance about your future. It's a great idea to connect with people who are working in the field that interests you to find out what they do, and imagine yourself doing it! You can also visit local science centres or museums to see what upcoming activities they have, with special exhibits or visiting experts that interest you.
