International Year of Planet Earth
The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to be a triennium spanning 2007-2009. Canada responded by establishing a Canadian National Committee in 2007, which requested ideas from the Earth science community in Canada for projects that would enhance Canadians’ understanding of Earth science and the importance of Earth resources in everyday life. An emphasis was placed on those projects that would provide a lasting legacy. The theme chosen for Canada’s celebration of IYPE was WHERE on Earth? WHERE in Canada? The WHERE is an acronym for Water, Hazards, Energy, Resources and the Environment.
