The Canadian Geoscience Education Network is concerned with all levels of Earth science education in Canada and encourages the efforts of the Canadian Earth science community to increase public awareness of geoscience. It is part of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences. Membership is free.
CFES Educational Resources
Four Billion Years and Counting is a popular book published in 2014 that presents an accessible view of Canada’s geology. EarthLinks provides educators and everyone interested in Earth science with an array of links to useful web sites that provide classroom resources, on-line resources, and information on careers in Earth science, geotours, geoparks, museums and other Earth science related organizations across Canada.
The Canadian Geoscience Education Network (CGEN) developed this website to educate, excite, and encourage youth to consider a career in the Earth sciences. The website is part of Canada’s celebration of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE 2007-2009). It is updated and improved annually.
The Challenge is a national contest endorsed by the Canadian Earth sciences community that asks students aged 9 - 14 years to discover the answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from? See the winning entries here.
GeoVistas are downloadable brochures that explain iconic views in Canadian parks. They are site-specific vignettes that combine engaging descriptions of geological features in the landscape with information on how they have influenced climate, ecology and culture. Precise GPS coordinates allow you to reach these accessible sites.
The International Year of Planet Earth (2007-2009) was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations and celebrated in 79 countries. In Canada about $0.5 million was raised by a national committee that oversaw the development of projects aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of Earth science.
CFES Partner Organizations
The International Union of Geological Sciences promotes development of Earth science through the support of broad-based scientific studies aimed at preserving Earth’s natural environment, using natural resources wisely and improving prosperity of nations and quality of life. It also enhances public awareness of geology and advances geological education.
